USCG Sandy Hook Beach Sweep - June 30

Posted on Jun 18 2018 - 9:05am

We were invited back to Station Sandy Hook by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary to participate in their Heroes on the Water event.  They’re again looking for volunteers to help do a beach sweep on the bay side in advance of their big NY event.  It takes about 2 hours and will get the boys conservation hours while supporting a great cause.  Last year we got a tour of a number of the Coast Guard boats and this year the new station is open so we may get to see that as well.  Please note tours are subject to availability of the active duty guys, if they need to work we’re out of luck on a tour but that’s not been an issue yet.

Who are Heroes on the Water:

OUR MISSION

To help warriors relax, rehabilitate and reintegrate through kayak fishing and the outdoors.

HOW WE HELP

Since being founded in 2007, Heroes on the Water has been organizing no-expense kayak fishing trips for active-duty military and veterans of the U.S. armed forces and their families. In 2018, we began serving first-responders and their families through the same proven ecotherapy. Heroes can reflect in solitude or connect in groups as they learn kayaking and kayak fishing basics.

Recurring activities give heroes and their families camaraderie and a lifelong social network with like-minded people. Plus, no experience or equipment is needed, and kayak fishing is adaptive to those with disabilities.

About the Beach Sweep:

June 30: 8:30AM at USCG Station Sandy Hook at the far end of Sandy Hook
Each person needs to have a pair of gloves. I hope to have rakes and garbage bags for the trash. Also, i should have an ice chest of water.

Expect that with enough help, should only take a few hours.

Join our 1st Summer Camp at Forestburg Scout Reservation!

Posted on Jun 5 2018 - 9:58am

Dan Beard Camp is eleven wooded campsites situated on the Southwest side of Burnt Hope Lake at Forestburg Scout Reservation. In this setting, Scouts and Scouters alike will truly experience the patrol method in action. Scouts cook their own meals and clean up after themselves. It is here that Scouts can really put their Scout skills to the test. Dan Beard campers take pride in doing it themselves.

Scouts and Scouters will camp in typical Boy Scout canvas tents, which are set atop wooden platforms. These tents are provided and already set up. In each tent, there are two steel spring cots for your comfort. It is recommended that each camper bring some type of sleeping pad to place between the cot and his sleeping bag. Cot springs may puncture air mattresses. For this reason, they are not recommended.
